What’s the opportunity about?

As the Product Design Lead you will be managing a team of product designers to build a successful product design organization while also contributing to key initiatives as a senior individual contributor.

Our product designers (PDs) partner directly with product management and engineering as Product Trios. They are expected to co-define and own the product strategy, vision, and guiding principles, and deliver on committed objectives. PDs play a key role in continuous discovery and ensuring that the investments we make are most impactful for our users and our business.

You will be directly managing a team of three product designers (with potential for growth). You will own structuring and leading all aspects of product design, including processes, rituals, systems, and the design system. You will balance these managerial responsibilities with contributing as a senior IC Product Designer on strategic initiatives and/or on a specific team. In this role, you will report directly to the head of product.

You will be working in a B2B environment with deep tech, specifically on an AI-based product, so you should be excited about ownership over complex problems and creative technical solutions.

Responsibilities

• Managing the Product Designers at Unbabel:
  • Grow and develop the team so they succeed in their teams;
  • Provide technical support and mentorship;
  • Hire and develop the team;
• Leading the Product Design Function:
  • Setting up the processes, rituals, and ways of working for the product design team;
  • Collaborating with the other functions in the company (engineering, revenue, product management, customer happiness) to address any concerns related to the product design team way of working and to customer escalations;
  • Designing the research practices for the team;
  • Advocating for product design excellence by taking a principled approach to design, focusing on crafted execution and an evidence-based methodology;
  • Partnering with product managers to decide when to “act quickly” to solve a pressing issue and when to drive research and practice hypothesis driven development.
• Solving complex Product Design Challenges:
  • Addressing complex Information Architecture challenges related to the Unbabel platform;
  • Jumping in to support teams or specific topics where your expertise is required.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a product designer in technology products, with experience in Product Trios, practicing Continuous Discovery, Delivery, Research and experimentation.
• 2+ years of experience managing people, hiring, and developing
• Experience setting up (or supporting the setup) of a design organization, including all processes, rituals, systems, and design systems.
• A metric-driven mindset, working towards strategic product objectives.
• A sound business understanding to make decisions in an environment with limited resources - knowing when to “just act” and when to dive into deeper research.
• A deep understanding of information architecture informed by experience with B2B SaaS experience - particularly in products with a platform component.

You will thrive if you have

• The ability to design research practices for the team;
• The ability to deliver wireframes, flow maps, information architecture, lo-fi and hi-fi prototypes, and implementation-ready designs;
• Expert command of design tools such as Figma, Miro and whiteboards;
• Solid understanding of usability heuristics & design principles (balance, hierarchy, harmony, contrast, emphasis, repetition, pattern, rhythm, motion);
• Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with a diligent, autonomous, can-do attitude;
• Passion for language, artificial intelligence, and behavioral psychology;
• Excellent command of English (C1 level as a minimum).
