We’re hiring a Director, Social Media, to join our team. This is a full-time, New York City-based position.

About the team

theSkimm is hiring a full-time Director of Social Media to expand our brand presence and engage our audience across social media platforms. Reporting to our SVP of Content, this role is creative meets strategy. You will be responsible for overseeing the production of social media content that informs our audience of women and drives both engagement and revenue. You will sit in the Editorial department and manage a team of social and video producers and hosts, collaborating closely with theSkimm’s Design, Sales, Data, and Growth teams.

What you'll be doing

  • Setting and overseeing social media strategy for official brand accounts (with an emphasis on Instagram and TikTok, but also including Threads, LinkedIn, and emerging platforms), inclusive of social-first content, coverage of current events, and extensions of our wellness, money, parenting, and shopping verticals
  • Establishing theSkimm’s brand and news presence on social with a goals-driven, audience-first eye, developing a clear distinction and purpose between it and our other platforms
  • Managing a team of producers, editors, and hosts and creating clear processes and operations for the team
  • Working with external creators and experts to co-create content for theSkimm social platforms
  • Leading pitch meetings to optimize timely content, and setting the posting schedule across multiple social media channels
  • Editing — or delegating the editing of — all social media posts, ensuring alignment with strategy, brand identity, and content tentpoles
  • Liaising with sales and commerce teams to optimize sponsored and revenue-driving social media content
  • Analyzing and building reports around performance data, and adjusting strategy to meet performance metrics and encourage innovation
  • Creating the high-level social strategy for large-scale campaigns or content initiatives, such as election coverage
  • Representing our social team in cross-departmental meetings
  • Administering all third-party and internal social media tools and content management systems

What would set you up for success

  • 7-9 years of social media experience (inclusive of video) in an editorial environment, with a proven track record of increasing audience engagement and driving growth
  • Experience analyzing data, building reports, and communicating insights to various audiences
  • Expertise in concepting, producing, and publishing content for Instagram and TikTok
  • Experience working and structuring deals with creators
  • Ability to adapt quickly to a changing digital landscape
  • Superior news judgment, research, and fact-checking expertise
  • Strong managerial skills and the ability to uphold an environment of learning, growth, and mentorship within a growing team
  • A player/coach mentality who can think big picture while still getting your hands dirty
  • Expertise and passion for culture, trends, and new media ventures

What would set you apart

  • A background in journalism
  • Experience launching social accounts on new platforms from scratch
  • Strong understanding of theSkimm’s brand and voice and ability to communicate its message with consistency
  • Video production or editing experience
  • Experience executing on branded content
  • Knowledge of copyright laws for social media publishing
  • Experience with Dash Hudson, Figma, Falcon, CrowdTangle, Instagram Insights, and Asana

The expected annual base salary for this role is $150,000-$160,000. We’ll consider a variety of factors when determining the offered base salary including an evaluation of a candidate’s skills, abilities, experience, location, market demands, and internal parity.

About the office

This is a full-time role based in New York, NY with flexibility for remote work.

Our office is available to use three days a week - Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We have a hybrid environment and ask that employees within the New York Metro area come together in person a minimum of three days per month. All other days are up to the discretion of the employees during the three days a week that the office will be open.
