We’re looking for a Senior MySQL Database Engineer to own performance, reliability, and high-availability design across our fleet.
While we’d love someone near Newcastle who can join us in the office occasionally, we know great engineers don’t all live in the same place. We are fully remote-first and open to flexible working across the UK.
What You’ll Do
• Own the design, optimisation, and scaling of high-availability MySQL systems.
• Improve query performance, indexing strategy, and schema design to keep our platform fast and efficient.
• Manage upgrades, migrations, and replication topologies (GTID, multi-master, geo-replication) with minimal downtime.
• Monitor, detect, and resolve database performance issues before they impact customers.
• Partner with engineering teams to evolve our database architecture as the platform grows.
• Set best practice, mentor engineers, and uplift database engineering across the organisation.
What You Bring
• Deep MySQL expertise - performance tuning, replication, schema optimisation, and backup/recovery.
• Hands-on experience with Percona Toolkit, Performance Schema, PMM, Grafana, or Prometheus.
• Strong Linux fundamentals and an understanding of networking basics.
• Experience supporting high-scale or high-volume production systems.
• Excellent communication and the ability to collaborate with product, engineering, and platform teams.
Nice-to-Have
• PostgreSQL or NoSQL experience (MongoDB, Druid).
• Experience with automation (Python, Bash, Ansible).
• Exposure to containerised environments (Docker, Kubernetes).
