About the role
Taxually is looking for a Tax Technology Specialist with an indirect tax background to join our Filing Content team. Experience with US sales tax is a plus. You will turn tax legislation and authority requirements into the filing logic, data mappings and submission files that power automated tax compliance across US states and Canadian provinces.
This role sits between tax and technology. You don't need to be a developer, but you should be comfortable reading structured data (XML, JSON, Excel) and using AI tools to build and validate technical outputs. You will work closely with our Product, Development, and Operations teams.
Key responsibilities
- Research and interpret tax legislation and official authority documentation (forms, filing instructions, technical specifications) across US states and Canadian provinces.
- Translate regulatory requirements into concrete filing rules: sales tax returns, remittance forms, and other periodic declarations.
- Map transactional and tax data to filing outputs, and build or maintain submission files (XML/XSLT, CSV, Excel).
- Monitor legal and regulatory changes (new rates, form changes, e-filing developments) and assess their impact on our filings and product.|t
- Test and validate filing outputs against official requirements and real scenarios, including corrections and amendments.
- Investigate filing issues, identify root causes and document fixes.
- Write clear requirements and documentation for Development and Operations teams.
- Use AI tools to speed up research, mapping and validation — while checking the results critically.
Requirements
Must have
- 3+ years of experience in indirect tax — compliance, return preparation and review, or tax advisory (Big 4, tax service provider, or in-house tax team).
- Solid understanding of indirect tax concepts: taxability, multi-jurisdiction compliance, exemptions.
- Some exposure to US sales tax or Canadian indirect tax (GST/HST/PST/QST) is a plus, but not required — willingness to learn the US/Canada landscape is what matters.
- Ability to read official tax authority documentation and turn it into precise, structured rules.
- Comfortable working with structured data (Excel at an advanced level; basic understanding of XML or JSON).
- Analytical mindset, attention to detail, and a preference for understanding root causes.
- Fluent English, written and spoken.
Nice to have
- Experience with tax technology or compliance platforms, or with tax automation projects.
- Exposure to XML/XSLT or electronic filing formats from tax authorities.
- Experience writing functional requirements, testing or UAT.
- Practical experience using AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot) in technical or tax work.
Hiring process
- CV screening by HR and the Filing Content team.
- Take-home technical exercise: map tax return data from a source XML into a tax authority's submission format, using official documentation and AI tools.
- Interview with the Filing Content team to discuss the exercise, your tax background and your approach.
- Final interview.
